Thanks
for all your help at the 2006 Great Tree Canopy Comeback.
On November 4, 2006, The Friends of the Parks
of Allen County and The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department
had our 5th Annual Great Tree Canopy Comeback. This year’s
event took place in Vesey, Lions, McCormick, Waynedale and
Gren Parks, as well as Salomon Farm.
Funding for the trees for this year’s
event came from the members of the Friends of the Parks, The
Journal-Gazette Foundation, and generous donations from Fort
Wayne City Councilmen Didier, Crawford, Shoaff, and Talarico.
Cornerstone Landscape Group and The Parks and Recreation Department
also provided augers for the digging of holes for the trees.
For the first time since the beginning of the
event we also had a party at Salomon Farm following the event.
It was hosted by the Oldies 101.7, who provided food and music
as well as radio advertising.
The event was a big success. Just over 170 volunteers
planted 215 trees in about 2 hours on a beautiful fall Saturday
morning. None of it would have been possible without the help
of volunteers from The Friends of the Parks, Parks and Recreation
Department and several local civic groups. Some of the groups
that helped included Bishop Luers and Bishop Dwenger Key Clubs,
Northrop High Schools Global Warming Awareness Council, The
McCormick Boys and Girls Club, Trees Indiana, and several
Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops from around the area. There
was also a good deal of help from neighborhood groups and
other individuals who heard of the event from other sources.
Next year’s event will again be on the
first Saturday in November at 10:00 A.M. We hope that you
will all mark this event on your calendars and we look forward
to seeing you there.
Thanks again for everyone’s help.
